We are in the market for a new car seat...Leo is soon to be too big for his infant seat! I am looking for a convertible car seat that can be rear-facing for the next few months, then face forward with a 5 point harness and be a booster with the regular lap belt when he gets big enough.
I also want it to recline, be easy to clean, and if possible not be huge...I swear some seats are bigger than mine and neither of our cars is that big.
Any suggestions?

we've got a britax convertable for each of our kids. They are a little more expensive but high quality. we usually find them for a good price on amazon about 150. Lorelai's was a boulevard or marathon i forget which and Jonathan's was the other one but we love them. Lorelai is still rear facing in hers.
Andrew has a Britax Roundabout Convertible seat. We have friends whose nephew was killed in a car crash, and they will only use Britax seats - if I remember correctly that is because the safety features are more stringent than required in the USA. It also is approved for air planes, which is a nice feature. It does recline, and can be rear or forward facing (Andrew has used it both ways). It also has a good 5-point harness that he cannot get out of. As far as size it is small for a convertible seat, but it is still big. More crowded rear-facing than forward, but it still works in the back seat of our sedan and two other people can sit in the back as well.
It does not convert to a booster, they probably have other models that do.
We bought just the cheap "Cosco" (not Costco) brand car seat from ShopKo when Olivia was tiny and we've loved it. It works for newborns up through the time you need a booster seat. So, while it doesn't take you all the way through a booster seat, it's probably a better deal anyway because these car seats usually go for around $50 at Walmart. And, though I've never bought a booster seat, I'm pretty sure they're way, way cheaper than car seats. It's the lame answer, I know, but it's super economical. Oh, and it's super slim, which I love.
Good luck!
I don't know the ins and outs of carseats yet, but my sister-in-law is a certified carseat tech and LOVES talking carseats. I can email her for you if you want a detailed answer.
We got the Cosco one as well. It was $40 at Walmart. I also bought a booster for $30 at Walmart. I figure, at some point, I will need both anyway (like when I have multiple children). I recently traveled with the Cosco, and while it was definitely less convenient than traveling with an infant seat (which you just snap into a stroller), it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I saw lots of moms trying to tote their big expensive convertible carseats and felt sorry for them. It is small enough that I was even able to install it rear facing on the airplane!
