Leo - 15 months

Leo is growing up.  I swear that not a day goes by that someone doesn't stop me and tell me how much of a boy he is, instead of a baby that is.  I agree...much to my dismay my little baby boy has grown up into a very cute and curious little kid.

When we went in for his 15 month well-check two weeks ago, we found out that he had grown 2 inches in the last 3 months!  No wonder his shirts were looking short recently!  That makes him 32 inches tall now.  We also discovered that our boy had indeed slowed down his weight gain, just as we had expected, since he is literally running everywhere now...he is currently 25 lbs 12 oz.  (That is a few ounces more than his 12 month well-check, but a few less when he went in for an ear-infection a month or so ago.)  He does look very tall and skinny to me now, but I guess it is all just relative.

Leo's new tricks include many animal sounds- we are proficient with moo, quack quack, baaa, bawk bawk, neigh (said very high), bit (short for ribbet), ssssss (for a snake), meow meow, ruff ruff, ahh ahh (said in a high voice and short for ooh ooh, ahh ahh like a monkey) and can sometimes get a roar for a lion or bear.

He can show us how old he is by putting up one finger and can jump on command.  He claps, waves, folds his arms, combs his hair, and knows where his ears are.  He can open his mouth and say "ahhh" as we often ask him to do so we can check his teeth or if his food is all gone.  He is learning how to blow a kiss.

He tries to put on his shoes, which means he wants to go outside.  He tries (and sometimes succeeds) to open the dvds, which naturally means he wants to watch Baby Einstein.  He can identify and say truck, car, bus, book, bath, Elmo, ball, drink, bubble, cracker, cookie, hot, cook, and all of the animals that he makes sounds for.  It is so fun to hear him meow and realize our cat has just walked into the room or hear him moo and then see a cow on a billboard or something- it is like he really gets it!

He can blow, which he tries to do with bubbles but it doesn't work yet.  His blowing skills do come in handy with hot food though and he usually blows by the stove since I am always telling him it is hot.  He could drive cars around all day long- that is seriously not an exaggeration!  And he is getting really good and walking on his tiptoes!

He loves the swings at the park and any wheel he can get his hands on.  He has learned to go down the slide by himself and is starting to be a bit of a climber...on the arm of the couch to reach the light switch, etc.

Leo loves the bath and usually climbs in when I am too busy to notice to play even without the water (usually while I am vacuuming).  He loves Koshka and takes his "chore" very seriously to remind us to feed her.  He meows to her all the time and pushes her when she sits in the rocking chair.

Leo is addicted to reading, there could be far worse things right?, and we read the same books all day long.  He brings book after book to you and wants to sit on your lap and turn the page.  He is getting quite good at following directions and little rhymes with actions.

We've had a hard time with feeding Leo lately...he was great, then not, then great again, and has recently been more picky.  I am telling myself that it is teething and a phase and that it will pass soon enough.  He still only has 6 teeth!  I did just see a bottom molar pop out (one corner of it at least) so I am hoping that helps him to feel a bit better.  We have all had a cold for the last week or more and he is finally napping without me holding him and being less whiney in the day...and he sleeps like a champ at night :)

Leo loves his dad; they have so much fun together.  He loves when Dad will follow him around with his cars and often asks for him and looks for his during the day.  He gets so excited once I tell him we are going to find him or he is coming home...and the look on his face when he finds Nick is priceless.  They love to throw balls, "fly", read, chase each other, and more.  Pretty much anything is better with Dad around!

We love our big boy and wish he would stay this age forever!  He is too fun right now :)

You want an update?  We are still sick and I am still eating Special K.  And yes, Nick caught the sickness just in time for his finals this week...woohoo.  All I can say is that this week HAS to be better than last week; it just has to!!!

We are under the weather here.  Nuts.  I was hopeful it was a new tooth or six making a debut (he has got to get them soon right?  He only has 6 still!) however when I got the cough and sore throat, etc. I figured that we both have the same thing.  At least Nick hasn't caught it...yet.  I'm sure he is waiting for finals next week :)

In other news, I'm on day one of the Special K challenge...it can't hurt, right?  Lots of the baby weight came off without much effort...then with just a few pounds to go the scale started going the other way and hasn't looked back since no matter how much I exercise or skip treats or what.  Guess it is time to do something drastic, although I hate that because it is terribly inconvenient to change.  Oh well...gotta do something different to get something different!  So I'm doing this little challenge for two weeks to break up with food and then we'll go from there.  We have been trying harder lately to eat well and I was proud of myself that at least half of my grocery cart today was produce...oh how I wish I could garden!  Someday I am going to have a big garden :)  But for now I can at least buy a lot of produce!  (p.s. Bought the first watermelon of the season today!  Yum!  I think I have already eaten like 1/4 of the monstrous thing!)

White Sandals Anyone???

Is anyone in desperate need of a pair of white espadrilles? Women's size 8?

I bought #6 above in white last year...I talked myself into them thinking I should be more practical (i.e. lower heels) about my espadrilles since I was toting a baby everywhere last summer. You know what happened? I can count on one hand how many times I wore them. There is nothing wrong with them...they just weren't "me" and I didn't feel great in them. Bahumbug.

I hate to part with them since they are still so new, however I realistically am never going to wear them- I didn't last year when they were my only pair and this year I have already bought a new pair that is much more "me"...yes, they have higher heels. :) So it would really help me out if someone I knew really needed them...then I would definitely not feel so bad about cleaning them out of my closet!

Any takers???

True Story!

I didn't even think to take a picture at the time, so you will just have to take my word on this.

Nick, Leo and I were taking a walk on Sunday morning. We were almost home- as in just a few cars away from ours in the parking lot- when Nick spotted a bird on the hood of a car...it was flailing. Upon closer inspection we noticed that it was stuck in the little crack between the hood of the car and the side/body of the car, about a foot or so down from the windshield on the passenger side.

What to do???

I am no lover of birds, but it isn't in my nature to just pass up an animal in need either. I happened to have the mail in my hands so I tried to nudge it a little with the mail- yep, lots of flailing and it was really stuck. I am pretty sure I jumped each time it started to flap its wings, but I still couldn't think of leaving it.

So I went to my car, found a shirt in the "drop off to goodwill one of these days" bag, and wrapped it around my hand so I could touch the thing...because birds have diseases and stuff, right? Nick commented "Where is a vet student when you need one?" which is so funny because A&M is known for its vet school and we know plenty of vet students around here. I tried to grab the bird- it flailed and I jumped. Then it actually went to the bathroom on the car...guess I wasn't the only one who was nervous!

With a bird audience and Nick restraining Leo from running into the road, I tried again. I'm not sure what my plan was- pull its leg out? The bird flapped and flailed and I jumped...again. Just then I figured out how to get it free- if I could get it to slide up the crack all the way to the windshield then it could fly free...much better plan than just yanking its leg out somehow.

So for the third time I tried to grab the bird; and this time it let me. I carefully slid it up and before you know it the bird was free and flew over to a bush about 10 feet away. I could see as I was doing it that its ankle was red and probably broken, but it flew so I am assuming it is okay.

Anywho, so there you have it! It was quite an amazing thing to encounter and I can honestly say I am not sure if I could do it again, but I just couldn't pass that stupid ugly bird trapped like that! Hopefully that means I have good karma* for awhile :)

*(Side note- I don't...because today my car battery died! Thank you Dad and the nice people at AutoZone who helped me fix it.)*

The War

I feel like I was in a war today...but it was just parenthood. What is the difference again anyway? Leo has recently discovered a serious personality and has opinions on everything. He has learned the word "no" and uses it over and over all day long. My once good eater is totally MIA and I am pretty sure the kid is made up of 80% Fruit Loops. My goals and productivity have totally changed- once upon a time I tried to get a few things done each day...now I just try to survive until bedtime!

I keep trying to remind myself of how sweet a baby he was and that this is surely a phase, but it doesn't make the days go by any faster! And it sure doesn't prevent me from getting my hair pulled or make him not try to jump out of the moving shopping cart. Today just seemed like a long one I guess because it was rainy and so we couldn't kill energy and time at a park like usual. Sigh. Can I just say we are not looking forward to a hot summer? Being able to play outside has been heaven on earth...even if he does get scrapes and ant bites!

But the boy is in bed now- not asleep, but in bed- and I am going to get on my jammies (yes, it is 7:30...but with your baby in bed and your husband gone it isn't like you can go anywhere anyway...may as well be comfy, right?) I am going to pull my hair up into a ponytail, drink a big glass of water, and try to gird up for yet another day of battle. :)

He had a birthday...shout hooray!

Warning: Be prepared for a lot of pictures! And not very good ones at that...but he is my only baby so you'll have to indulge me :) And yes, I know this is long over-due...

Leo turned 1 year old on January 26th this year. A whole year. We decided to celebrate with a train-themed party, just for family. Leo really liked trains at the time...he still does, however now he is more into the general wheel so it doesn't have to be a train. Let me tell you that boy is obsessed with wheels!!! But that is an entirely different blog post...

For his actual birthday, a Thursday this year, we dressed him in his best duds (joking!) and headed over to McD's and treated him to a happy meal...just me and Nick.

Now I know that seems pretty ghetto, but what kid doesn't love a happy meal?

Plus we are on a budget and all that. And it kind of holds a special place in our hearts...right after giving birth my parents asked me what kind of food I wanted them to go get me (I hadn't eaten all day, remember?) and I was so hungry that I said the biggest thing I could possibly think of...a Big Mac. I had never had one before but it just seemed to fit. So we went and had Big Macs in honor of the day of his birth...and afterwards I told Nick to never let me a Big Mac again. It seemed so good a year ago...

Anywho, then we let him dive in to a little cupcake that I had made when I made his cake for the party...he had to get at least some cake on his real birthday right? He loved the sneak preview :) The following Saturday we had the family that was able over to our place for lunch and presents.

I had a fun time creating a train ticket invitation in photoshop :) I printed them on brownish paper and used a hole punch (punching half-circles along the two short ends) to make them look like an authentic ticket. I was pleased with how they came out.

We hung our birthday banner and set out the spread.

We weren't very fancy, but I had this idea for a cake that I really wanted to try making and I thought it turned out so cute.

When I was working on it I got the idea to hang some "puffs of smoke" from the ceiling with fishing line.

Nick helped me decorate the cake...and engine, animal car, "gravel" car, and caboose.

Chugga chugga woo woo!!!

Now on to the guests! Tara had managed to sneak a quick trip in that weekend...

...and Grammie wouldn't miss it for sure...

...Ben, Isabelle, and Nicholas were thrilled to be there...

...Clifford, of course...

...and Livi, and me, and the birthday boy dressed in his train overalls...

...and Grandpa Elmo too! Amy was there somewhere...I think you can see her in one of the earlier pictures. To be honest my camera is a goner and so most of the pictures are from her, hence why she isn't in them!

Birthday or not, Leo always has a fun time with his cousins around :)

After enjoying some barbeque sandwiches and sides, it was time for presents!

Leo was thoroughly spoiled by family near and far :)

Then we finally dived into the cake! We did that last, well, because I knew a bath would be imminent! There are still traces of that red icing on his high chair!

He was a bit hesitant at first...

...but then he got going and did just fine!

We are so thrilled to have Leo in our family; he is a such a sweet and loving boy and we love him like crazy! Happy birthday little man!
